.doc to .txt conversion

hello
i have written a script in perl that reads from a file and counts the number of occurences of a particular word.now the file that i have to read is of the microsoft office document format..but in my system the script works well with text files but not with files of the .doc format.i tried to copy the contents of the file to gedit but i couldnt do that..and i am not able to open the file when i try to open it using gedit..could any one tell me how to convert the .doc file to .txt file in linux???

i exactly dont know whether the file is .doc format..i think so because it opens with abiword processor..Actually the extension of the file was .log.....the file is the output of a software check performed in a windows platform..

It you can open the file with OpenOffice.org Writer, go to File - Save As - and select .txt as the file type. Abiword should also offer .txt in the Save As file type.
