dns setting

hey,

Running slackware 12.1 and looking at the resolv.conf, noticed that is says: search nameofserver
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx
(the above is just an example)
When I usually change the DNS on servers I usally just put
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx
like so. What does specifing search actually do? I usally take out that line.
