DNS problem: Name or service not known

When trying to ssh on FQDN, the resolving fails :

[Jonas@jonas ~]$ ssh -l root webserver.jocan.local
ssh: Could not resolve hostname webserver.jocan.local: Name or service not known

or I get this :

reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for asterisk.jocan.local [192.168.1.150] failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT!

[root@jonas jonas]# cat /etc/resolv.conf 
# Generated by NetworkManager
domain jocan.local
search jocan.local
nameserver 192.168.1.5

192.168.1.5 is the DNS-server (not DHCP-server) which has FQDN-IP mappings...
The DHCP-server is a Zyxel router which gives 192.168.1.5 as DNS-server (option 6).

So why is DNS-resolving failing ?

My Suggestions:

1. Is the DNS service running properly in the server. Is it serving the purpose for other clients?
If not, start the named service, check selinux is blocking anything.

2. Is it possible to connect to the DNS server? (ping.)

3. Is firewall blocking anything (iptables)
