directory structure

Hey,

What are some popular ways of setting up directory structures? I have Mandrake 8.1 on my PC, and it's being used for simple desktop work and net surfing. Currently I have three partitions:
/ , /swap, and /usr. Is this a good start? Secondly, if I'm downloading mp3s, movies, software, etc, is it wise to make a separate data partition? Since I'm dual booting windows and linux, I think I'd like to try and setup a windows fat32 partition, and then mount that partition when I start Linux. Does this make sense so that both o/s can see the partition?

thanks,
sluggo

i usually tend to make my partitions like this..

swap
/boot
/ - with all other dir's like /proc, /etc...etc on same partition.
/root
/usr
/home
/tmp

you could make a separate data partition, it would be good to have if your system crashes, you could easily reinstall and reformat all your partitions besides that data one...

oh, swap i usually make around 100 megs.. /boot can easily be 16 megs, / a few gigs.. some make it a gig.. /usr can be fairly large as most packages are installed there. /home is usually users home directories.. i am usually the only user on my own system besides root, so i make it usually 2 or more gigs.. /tmp i usually make around 500 megs.. temp files go here.

hope that helps somewhat..
