Does the same problem affect all the USB ports and different USB sticks/devices, or only particular ones?

Have you tried putting the USB stick into another USB port, or trying another USB stick?

So your laptop&Ubuntu detects one model USB, but not another.
Can you tell us more specifics about the two USBs? (model# etc)

You might find some clues (to post here, as a comparison of the 2 USBs) from commands like:
dmesg|tail; lsusb; inxi; ... (maybe other LQ'ers have other diagnostic ideas)

Best wishes... Let us know...

Searching for 090c:1000 linux on the internet reveals some problems with this USB stick, including faulty contacts (someone suggested pressing down on the stick a bit on it when inserting it). Another thread suggests mounting the USB stick manually for it to be recognised.

Do that internet search, try a few of the suggestions, and let us know if any of them work.
