debian user moving to openSUSE

Hey linux questions, i havn't been here for months, maybe even a year, i hope you're all well. I've just scored a nice job and have been told i need to start using redhat or suse, i have no idea why. I've decided i'm going with suse(leap), since most workmates that i have been introduced to run suse. If any of you use suse it would be great to hear your points.

1. i use apt-get to update my system. can i do the same thing with zypper from the command line?

2. would you recommend gnome or the kde enviroment.

It is a matter of personal taste, go for what you like.

suse is VERY gui centric
that is it is normally easier to do most things from the yast2 GUI

but

a normal everyday update ( if you have "apper" DISABLED -- i do ) is easy using zypper

Code:
su -
zypper up
now i DO RECOMMEND!!! that you set a different root password than the first non root user

-- yes a real root account

as to kde

i WAS a very BIG fan of Gnome2
-- hate gnome3 with a passion !!!

KDE grows on you , it is a good UI
about the only real downside is that there might be TOO MANY settings to customize

suse uses KDE so it is not a big deal

Warning:
yes i put a warning for this
SUSE dose things DIFFERENTLY than RedHat and Fedora
while you can use a rhel or fedora guide as a "VERY BASIC" guide ( you have to PORT it for use on SUSE )
most things are a bit different from those two

so

you REALLY do need to use the SUSE documentation

If it was my choice, since they said Red Hat, I'd ask which version of RedHat they use, 6 or 7? Then install CentOS 6 or 7. I have very little experience with RH or Centos 7 but version 6 is very stable. and it's very easy to update. I tried to use OpenSuse for a little while and didnt like that it had too many updates for many programs all the time. Centos sticks with a little older programs but they are tried and tested and just work. This is just my personal experience, though.

that is likely from mis configuring the multimedia "packman" repo and oss
you can thank MPAA/RIAA / USPTO et.al for this ROYAL FUBAR of a mess

you REALLY NEED to use the suse documentation!!!!

the yast gui has a priorities setting
JUST LIKE YUM AND RHEL!!! for the "yum-priories" plugin
