I just installed sarge using the 2.6 kernel and debian installer rc1. It is on a 2000 xp system, soyo dragon+ mobo, there is a hard drive on ide1, dvd drive on ide2, an hp cd burner on the raid controller1 and zip drive on raid controller2. Audigy sound card (on-board sound turned off in bios) and geforce 3 ti200 video.

The install went fine, I installed gnome (apt-get install gnome) and I've ran into this problem. I am getting sounds from the operating system fine, and xmms will play .wav files without a problem, however if I attempt to play a music cd (purchased normal cd, not a copy) xmms will find the track information and start to play the song, light will come on cd, however I get nothing out of the speakers, and the equalizer on xmms is not moving.

I also tried the cd player which is part of gnome install and had the exact same situation.

I attmepted to go into /cdrom and see nothing on the drive, however going through xmms I can see the cd information.

I also attempted a data cd to check if I could see information off that, and had the same situtation, the system just appears as if there is nothing on the cd

My question is, does anyone have an idea how to get the music to play properly, and why can't i see any file structure on the cd's. There are several different places where cdrom is listed, both /cdrom and /dev/cdrom0 and /dev/cdrom1. I tried mounting them manually through command line and just get an error saying the cdrom is not in fstab.

I did confirm that the audio cable from the cd drive is plugged into the sound card.

I'm fairly new to linux, so at this point I'm confused.

Check and see if you have libcdaudio0 installed: The package page is here: http://packages.debian.org/testing/libs/libcdaudio0

Open xmms, and select Options>Preferences and choose "CD Audio Player" under "Input Plugins" Hope that works!

I installed the package using apt and it went without a hitch. However the same problem still exists, the timer will start, the track information is on xmms, however no sound, or movement on the equilizer.

I was able to play the cd through the gnome installed player totem with no problems.

If anyone else has any suggestions I'd be thankful.
