Code:
# tar -xzf /dev/st0 mybackupfolder
Exactly, the command you want to use is correct to restore the data.

But first you have to rewind the tape-

Code:
# cd /
# mt -f /dev/st0 rewind
# tar -xzf /dev/st0 mybackupfolder
