If you installed gnash with synaptic that's the best way to remove it.

I guess that flashplugin-alternative.so is a symlink that's part gnash package? I'm not familiar with the buntus.

Indeed!! In the firefox plugin folder, do "ls -l" (long listing). Then you will see if one of the files is actually a link.

touche---I was in a hurry. The fact is that theseph is trying really hard here.

Standing back a few feet, it occurs to me that I've never had an issue with the Adobe flash plugin. What is the alleged benefit of Gnash, and does it have known issues?

Just have a minute this morning.

The Adobe instructions that I linked in post #25, say that libflashplayer.so should be copied to: ~/.mozilla/plugins so let's try that.

As root type:
The above creates a symbolic link to the library (kinda like a windoze shortcut). For info typeIf you don't have the directory type this firstand then change directory and create the link.

None of your codes work...here's what i get

root@user1-desktop:/home/user1# cd /home/user1/.mozilla/plugins
bash: cd: /home/user1/.mozilla/plugins: No such file or directory

Same for all other codes now when i go to flash sites i get the bar across the top which says "additional plugins are required to display all media on this page" when i click "install missing plugins" it comes back with "No suitable plugins found"

The directory does not exist on your system so you have to create it:Then do the cd and the ln commands. And be sure to restart Firefox.

Just noticed that I had "user" instead of "user1" in the mkdir command above.

ok this is what i did

root@user1-desktop:/home/user1# ln -s /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so

now what do i do?

UPDATE: I have since this post moved the file from usr/lib/firefox/plugins to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins restarted the comp and flash still does not work i look at installed plugins on firefox get same as earlier post #34

Will this ever work? I'm starting to think that i have removed my swf player this is why it doesn't pick it up help please

[EDIT] We were posting at the same time again. The Adobe installation instructions say to put the file (or a link to the file) in "/home/user1/.mozilla/plugins". I have no idea whether this will work or not, but that is where they recommend that you put it. Since you moved the file the command becomes [END EDIT]

Okay, you didn't change to the "/home/user1/.mozilla/plugins" directory. What you did is create the link in "/home/user1".

I want to commend you for hanging in there.

After reading a few things here, I myself got confused.....On my system, I found 2 different flash plugins:
/home/username/.mozilla/plugins
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Then, in my firefox folder, I found that "plugins" was a link to the 2nd location above. I deleted the plugins folder in /home/username/.mozilla, and flash still works.

Next, I hid the plugins folder in /usr/lib/.... Now FF found the (older) flash plugin in /home/username/... (I had re-instated it from the earlier step)

My conclusion is that FF wants to find its plugins in any ONE of these 3 places.


The only thing I can suggest in your situation is to remove all traces of Firefox and Flash and start over. (If you do this, be sure to save your profile if you have bookmarks etc. that you need to keep)

You could also configure it exactly the way my system is: If you have the flash plugin in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, then go into your firefox folder, rename the plugins folder to hide it (eg mv plugins hideplugins) and then do this:
ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

(Be sure to restart FF when changing things.)

I, too, commend you for your perseverance. Using the command line is the IMO best way to learn about your Linux system. Many newbies get overwhelmed by the command line but you have stayed the course. Look at the commands you have learned by trying to get flash running: list directories (ls); change directories (cd); create directories (mkdir); untar/unzip files; find files; copy files (cp); move files (mv); create links (ln); change user / become super user (su). They will become second nature as you continue to use them. Of course these commands are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Try what Pixellany recommends above. If that doesn't work, you might post a thread in the Ubuntu forum of this site, with a descriptive title, to see if someone else has flash working on a ppc64.

hi, i occasionally use knoppix-live-cd and installing flashplayer-9 thru adobe's website used to work.
i have read somewhere that adobes install script for flashplayer-10 is fubar.

ubuntu and knoppix are both debian based; i read instructions about apt-geting flashplayer-10 from a certain debian multimedia repo gets it to work.

sorry i don't have specifics.

I just did a Slackware 12.1 install, and I could not get flash working immediately. I went to RL-1, then back to RL-5, and did startx and suddenly flash was working. Thinking it somehow was because I was root, I backed out, switched to normal user, and started X again. Now flash was working.

I do not have the energy at the moment to try and re-create what was going on.....
