Compile Program

I just completed my Slackware 9.1 installation. I am trying to learn Linux and I am a little concerened about compiling source code of a program to get it to run. So, Im looking for a useful program (with a small download) that I can download, compile and install to help teach me.

Do you know of any programs?

There is a tutorial pinned somewhere in the forum that uses GAIM as an example.

Thanks! Ill do a search for it.

Does anyone else have any program suggestions? My computer doesnt have internet so I need something non-web based. Thanks.

Even if you don't have access to the internet, you can still
use web-based programs to compile by setting the
destination IP to localhost.
