I assume that is the cause. On magnetic media, it probably isn't an issue. Whenever the cache can hold an appreciable percentage of the destination device, it might be.

That's ... expected, if you think about it.

I just tried it as you are running it, with two different ttys. Ctrl-Alt-F2 is running dd and I logged in on Ctrl-Alt-F3 and issued the kill command. The output is on Ctrl-Alt-F2, where dd is running.

My example failed because I backgrounded dd and did it all from one terminal.
