Changing file permissions and attributes

I know it's probably everywhere under the Linux manuals and howtos, but I am not sure where to look. How do I change the attributs and permissions of a file? What command is that? I need to make a file not read-only so I can put a line in it real quick.

look up the command "chmod"
that is the equivalent to attrib in the windows environment :P
so at the prompt you can type "man chmod", or go to google and find out more info if the manual is not clear enough

OK, like I said, it's probably in every manual and HOWTO for Linux, but I didn't know what command it was. Help me remember it

Also, the razzbary is with a lower case P.
