Unhappy Change user's home folder

I am new to Linux and think I made a huge mistake. I was taking over a someone else's linux box. I wanted to rename their account (not just make my own since I needed to keep all their files). I changed the username and then changed the user home folder. I assumed it would just rename the home folder but it didn't. I can't log on to the computer now unless I log in using failsafe mode. How can I either change the home folder back to the original folder from the command line, or rename the original home folder to what my account is pointing to. Please excuse my stupidity.
