My dvd/cd rom doesn't work after i "upgraded" to oneiric ocelot. Also,it's not possible to install a new OS using USB.

Is there an easy way to install online?

Thanks:W

install unebootin either on your hard drive or USB and it'll do it all for you.

FTP install used to be quite common but unfortunately as distros have gotten a lot bulkier it isnt the best option,if at all possible in terms of both server costs for developers and decent internet speeds for the end user.
there still are some that do FTP installs, but these are barebones installs if remember correctly, had looked into it due to having a netbook.

as cbtshare says, woud recommend using unetbootin [which is multi format] to make a bootable USB stick,it can download the distro if required, make sure the BIOS boot sequence has the USB stick set first though.
it does depend on how intact ubuntu is though, and if it is knackered-whether have got a windows partition.

is GRUB still intact? if so,choose the recovery option on the list.

An upgrade has nothing to do with the hardware being able to boot to a disk (cd or dvd.)

So it gets complex from here.

The easy way is to use some bootable media like floppy maybe to then download some os or use to gpxe or ipxe or pxe to some resource.

Worse comes to worse you might be able to use the OS you have now and chroot to an install. Pretty complex.

Best may be to remove drive and use another system to install to that drive and then return back to this unit.
