Yeah, being that you couldn't boot from it, your "reader" part or something got to be broken/dirty. And besides your kernel does detects your /dev/hdd device just fine (shows the info and everything). You should try cleaning your CD drive with those cd cleaner packs that come with some kind of liquid and stuffs.
If it still doesn't work, then it's over, you'll have to get a new drive. Well at least great timing to get a DVD drive.
The thing is, I still can't believe putting a DVD on a CD drive would break it, being that I once did it myself. Well, let's hope it's only dirty.
