I haven't tried the 'sudo su' or 'vi sudo' commands (is that what the latter command was)?

by default the following should be commenting out in the system
#auth required pam_wheel.so use_uid

you can change the required group.
if not, change you group.

the sudo config file cannot be modified with 'vi' or 'emacs'... you must use 'visudo' (not 'vi sudo', not ....)

I uncommented the line stating:

auth sufficient pam_wheel.so trust use_uid

leaving the comments around the line:

auth required pam_wheel.so use_uid

Doing so, when I try to "su", I get the following message:

su cannot setgroups: Operation not permitted
