Cannot start MySQL...

I installed MySql and apache on my my Red Hat 9.0, from Red Hat CD, through Add/Remove Applications(Package Management) which comes under KDE 3.1, the problem is that Apache is running fine, but when I type MySql or mysql at terminal windows to start MySql I get following error:
********************************************************************************************
ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
***********************************************************************************************
I have logged in as a user on my system not as root. Please help me, I am new user of LINUX.

It was not Installed and Service was not started

The MySql was not Installed properly, that is the reason, I again Installed MySql from CD, and then went to service manager where I saw MySql and started the service, then I found that MySql is running fine. I have yet to Install PHP.
