Cannot start kde/gnome remotely; Vmwared SUSE 10 & VNC

So I've purchased a small hosting package to learn the basics of linux.

They use the Vmware virtualization software. The OS is SUSE 10.

What works:
1. SSH via putty
2. Can login via vnc (with my xp box) to display this simple grey background with the xTerm shell

What does not work:
1. startx

Code:
vps1234:~ # startx
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.5076

I was trying to follow this guide here:
freeos.com/articles/2531

Made it till the part where it said to run X
from then on it lost me and I did not understand.

I simply want to run KDE or GNOME thruh vnc to play with the server.
Anybody can help a noob in need?

Thank You
