cannot read port 22 for ssh

I would like to turn on port 22 for SSH use but cannot figure
out how to do so. I am currently running Knoppix (on the hard drive)
and would appreciate any help at all.

Thanks,

Pauly

Welcome to LQ!

You probably just need to start the SSH server. /etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd start should do the trick. If you have a firewall running, you'll need to make sure port 22 is allowed through.

any idea on how I can see if I have a firewall running through Knoppix?

The command didn't work. I'm looking for the appropriate command for Knoppix.
