"fsck.ext3 /dev/hdc"
If that is literally the command that you are using then you need to include the partition number in the command. Something like:
fsck.ext3 /dev/hdc2
If you are using fsck.ext3 /dev/hdc2 and your post just has a typo then you are in trouble.
"e2fsck: bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hdc. Try e2fsck /b 8193"
If your partition cannot be fixed by fsck then you have lost that partition. You should format the partition and either restore it from backup or reinstall.
