cannot login because file system check fails because of bad magic number

Cannot login this morning on RH9.0. It tells that fils system check doesn't pass and it proposes to login in shell as root. In the shell, I try 'fsck.ext3 /dev/hdc', it tells

e2fsck: bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hdc. Try e2fsck /b 8193

I try, but it repeats the same message.

Can you help me ?

"fsck.ext3 /dev/hdc"

If that is literally the command that you are using then you need to include the partition number in the command. Something like:
fsck.ext3 /dev/hdc2

If you are using fsck.ext3 /dev/hdc2 and your post just has a typo then you are in trouble.

"e2fsck: bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hdc. Try e2fsck /b 8193"

If your partition cannot be fixed by fsck then you have lost that partition. You should format the partition and either restore it from backup or reinstall.
