cannot login

I am new to linux. I have a dual boot machine with win2k and redhat linux 9. When I try to login to the machine directly with any user including the root, I get an incorrect login. When I try to login using X I get an authentication error. I didn't make any changes the last time I was able to login(I don't think). All my partitions are mounting ok. I Booted single user and checked my /etc/passwd file and it seems ok. My question is were do I go from here?
Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated.

Boot into single user mode again and use the passwd command to change the password of the root user or some other user to something different, then try to log in normally.

when I did that and had no luck. I also tried creating a new user to see if I could login with that and couldn't.
