@scasey : Actually, you did say "never" that's what piqued my interest

Yeah , definitely running a test "find" with echo and taking a backup first are preferred.

What I sometimes do (because the above isn't always practical) is to cd into the target dir, double check where I am by using 'pwd', then (& only then ) 'rm -rf *' Sometimes I'll actually start from a dir above and 'rm -rf <dirname>', but I ALWAYS double check where I am (pwd) first and also double check the name of the target dir in the latter case.
