can not enter grub menu

hi I have rehel 5 & win xp installed on same computer .

I am annoyed with grub because it says

grub loading stage 2
Then there is interval of 2 seconds with 'press any key to continue'

During that interval keyboard does not work & xp starts booting thereafter .

keyboard (of lenovo) works fine in xp.

strange

if I plug in a USB then F12 brings up device to select to boot from which I select 'hard disk' followed by my magnetic hard drive (not USB pendrive entry) . Then pressing a simple down arrow brings up 'gnu grub version 0.97' with red background & RHEL5 title beneath . Otherwise I have to scratch my hair to no avail .
