First of all, Sorry for the bad english.

I install Ubuntu with no problems, but now that I wanna try Kubuntu I´m having some trouble.

I receive a copy of Kubuntu 7.04 , boot it , and choose to install it.

Everything was going fine until partitions.

I select 50-50% like with Ubuntu, the process start, I was distracted, and before I knew, the screen was black with the Kubuntu blue logo and it was shutting down!

It even gave me the cd back, like here.. I dont wanna be install.

So I run XP to see if my HDD was actually partitioned, and it was.

Round 2

Same thing, boot it from cd, try to install, now I choosd the option to install Kubuntu in any free partition. It made the partition, everything was going well, and it starts the linux installation.

And suddenly, black screen, heres your cd mister, bye bye.. notebook turn off again by itself.

I try running XP , cause obviously I was messsing too much with the HDD already, and I couldn´t load any OS, the thing just destroy my booting secuence.

Anyway, I format, re-install XP.. and I wanna try again.


Anyone know whats going on? Could it be the cd that doesn't work?

Any advice or guidance on how to make this work ?

Edit: I most add that the Kubuntu Install CD that I have, its the one you receive by ordering via internet, so Its not that I download it from any site or install it from Ubuntu.

The CD cover say Kubuntu 7.04 for your pc.. Pass it on!

I had a similar problem when installing regular Ubuntu.

I came to the conclusion that it was a graphics related issue.

Before hitting the 'Install Ubuntu' I went into the advanced options, which gave me a list of flags I could add to the install process, and I added '-noapic' which seemed to fix it.

If this fails try downloading the 'Alternatives' installation disk from Ubuntu.
This will allow you to follow a text-based install.

Kubuntu is not an application that you can install.
It is the Ubuntu operating system, but it uses KDE (KUbuntu).

If you want to run Kubuntu, you need to download it from here and install the OS.

As for installing regular applications you want to click on:
System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager

This will show you a list of software you can install from the Internet.

You do know that you don't have to install Kubuntu to install Kubuntu, don't you?

Kubuntu is the KDE version of Ubuntu (or it would be, if Ububtu wasn't the Gnome version rather than the plain or generic version). But, ignoring the semantic confusion caused by their naming conventions, from a Gnome Ubuntu you can just add the KDE bits to get youself a Kubuntu + Ubuntu installation (and you could add XFCE if you wanted).

So, provided that you have the 'net bandwidth to do it, you can use Synaptic (or apt/apt-get if you prefer the command line) to get the bits that you need. I think the kdebase package should pull in the basic packages, but you probably won't enjoy it until you add some of the kde utilities (k3b, konqueror,...) too.

Then all you have to do is use the 'chooser' at login to select which you want to boot into.

I'm having some problems with the screen resolution now, seems like I can't get a better resolution than 640x480. It just don't give me any other option.

Anyone know how to fix this?
