computer shuts down

i built a coomputer, first time. loaded fedora core 6. ( bought it at a book store).

power supply, case, memory, amd athlon dual core 64 cpu, hard drive, dvd and mother board with on board sound and video are all new.

when i try to log into the system with the gnome desktop it shuts off.

it will run in terminal mode but being a greenhorn i can't do much from there.

SlowCoder=no linux guru ... but ... I am experienced with hardware.

Since it's a new system, did you run diagnostics on it to make sure the hardware is sound? I recommend downloading memtest86 ( http://www.memtest86.com ) and running it to check your RAM.

Also, if you can boot into runlevel 3 (command line), can you execute 'startx' manually? What happens?

computer shuts down

if this makes a difference during boot up one line has an error.

Fatal: module ACPI_cpufreq not found.

when i run the startx command i get this:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1key giving up.

xinit: unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Thank you a hundred times for your interest

Did you try to do what the error says, and remove the temp file? At this point, probably what has happened is that the last time the xserver failed it left the file.

From what I know about your situation, I'd start by checking the video driver and settings in your xorg.conf file. In my experience, an improper or misconfigured driver could cause a computer to reboot spontaneously. This happens in both Windows and Linux.
