I can print from Firefox v. 31 on Mint 17 without issues.
The answers to smallpond's questions would help. It might also be useful to know what version of Firefox, what version of Mint, and what make/model of computer and printer, and how you are connecting to the printer (USB, networked, etc.). You might also take a look at the CUPS log files located in /var/log/cups, particularly the access log and the error log.
For pdf printing you might need to install okular. If the app uses old school printing you might need to install cups-bsd. Both of which may not have been installed by default. In many cases you can print to file and then print the file in another application. And other means to an end.
