Can't get my new Madrake 10.1 to boot

I've recently installed my Mandrake 10.1 system on a 30 gb partition of a hard drive (the other 10 gb partition has Win XP on it).
My problem is that on installing I kept getting error messages that some of the packages could'n be installed. I noticed they all where kind of *i586.rpm. the instalation kept going anyway.
Well, I tried to configure my Grub boot loader:
I'm asked to select an Image from the two existing :
Image : /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-12mdk
/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.27-0.pre2.1.mdk
(my root is set to /dev/hdc5 - it's default)
wich boot image i select , I can't add the new entry to the boot loader
because I get the error mesage :
mkinitrd failed :
(mkinitrd -v -f /boot/initrd.img--ifneeded 2.4.27-0.pre2.1.mdk)

then at the end : Instalation of bootloader failed.
The folowing error occured :
Fatal : stat /dev/hdc : No such file or directory

Can you please give me some advice..
I can't boot at all, and I couldn't make a boot disk either, because there isn't an option in the install wizard.
thanks
