Can't enter runlevel 3 on Fedora Core 5

I can't enter to runlevel 3. All daemons etc. start, but computer freezes every time just before the login should come to the screen (if I'm trying to come from runlevel 1 computer freeezes right after Hal-daemon, and if I come from runlevel 5 computer freezes almost before anything happens.

I need to get to the runlevel 3 in order to update my video-drivers. There is no way to shut down the x-server and still stay in runlevel 5 , isn't there?

If you just need to install your video drivers there is a different way to do it. Reboot your computer and when grub is running hit the 'a' button to append something to the kernel arguements. Add the word 'single' to the line that is there and hit enter. You will have a command line with root access at this point. When you are done you can reboot or type 'exit' to finish booting normally.

Single-user mode is runlevel 1.

I have allready tried to update the video drivers from runlevel 1 (single user mode) and it cannot be done because the updater can't find my kernel tree in that mode. According to the updater instructions I should go to the runlevel 3. And anyway, why can't I swich to runlevel 3? I have been trying to get tho the runlevel 3 by wrinting init 3.

Try switch to another terminal window (ctrl-alt-F2) when the transition from rl1 to rl3 freezes.

I'm having the same problem and would like an answer, too.

Problem is, by the time rl3 freezes, the only thing that seems to work is Ctrl + Alt + Del, which restarts the computer. Ctrl + Alt + F1-Fw/e don't do crap.

If you can boot into single usermode, simply modify the /etc/inittab file and set the the default runlevel to 3:

id:5:initdefault:
id:3:initdefault:

Reboot and make repairs as necessary

Now I can get to any runlevel by pressing CTRL-ALT-F1/F2 until I get a console window that does not freeze
