Can't add icon to panel

I installed the Mozilla build of Thunderbird 2.0.0.22 in ~/thunderbird/ under Ubuntu 9.04 and added a shortcut to it on the panel. It defaulted to the custom application shortcut icon. I can change the icon to one of the icons listed in the "browse icons" window (such as Evolution) but I want to use the Thunderbird icon.

I'm running into several problems:

1. The Thunderbird program directory doesn't have any .svg files. It only has .xpm icon files.

2. If I browse to a .svg file using the brwose button in the "browse icon" window it won't list any SVG files, even if I browse to usr/share/icons/Human/scalable/apps/ (which is the icons it lists by default).

I don't want to install somebody elses build (such as the 3rd party Ubuntu build) to workaround this problem. Suggestions?

I figured it out. The browse control requires you to select the directory, press OK, and only then will it list any files. Then you select the file and press OK.

Very non-intuitive! Every other browse or file -> open control I've ever used had you press the OK button once as the last step.

I thought I had to use .svg files because that is what was listed by default. However, I've been able to use the .xpm files or even .png files.
