broken synaptics package

Hi all - have run into a serious problem as the synaptic package manager is not working. I tried to install a driver for my brother printer (from the brother site) and it did not work. I then removed it via KDE print manager. When I was in synaptic I saw it was still installed, so I attempted to uninstall it. An error message came back (error 127 - mfc4800lpr needs to be reinstalled but I can't find the archive for it). Now, however, synaptic is not working as it will not display any packages at all. Same when I run Konsole - when I try to apt-get install something it tries to remove the mfc4800lpr package and the error message comes up and I can't get the desired package.

Newbie here and not sure what to do next. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Running SimplyMepis 3.3.1

Thanks

Bill

Add repository to apt-get. it could be ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/
If you don't know how to add it using apy-get, use synaptic and gui wizard.
after that run on console:
@su
[type passwd]
#apt-get update
#apt-get install ........................ (whatever package)

thanks Slacker

I can't get into synaptic at all. The gui comes up but on the left side lists "all" but nothing else shows up. When I search for files nothing is found other - the custom button works but gives me the standard list but again no files/packages are identified on the right side. I can't even get that mfc4800lpr file to show up I added the repository and ran the apt-get update (I know I'm root as I entered my password) but the error message comes back, listed below:

root@2[triune]# apt-get install gnubg
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
W: Couldn't stat source package list ftp://ftp.us.debian.org testing/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.us.debian.org_debian_dists_testing_main_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: The package mfc4800lpr needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
root@2[triune]#

when I load synaptic the message comes up, as follows:

E: The package mfc4800lpr needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

W: Couldn't stat source package list ftp://ftp.us.debian.org testing/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.us.debian.org_debian_dists_testing_main_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)

and when I click sections nothing comes up other than the all on the left side with nothing else listed. Not that I know all that much but I'm at a total loss.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Bill

There's something buggy going on with Mepis' sources.
For more info go to MepisLovers.

Do you run Mepis Live or HD? Because if Live then it will not remember repositories. If you made HD install then should be no problem
