Hi filmtechie!
Post #12 shows that you installed (or tried to install) Grub into the Master Boot Record - as customary.
There is another command:
Code:
dpkg --list | grep grub
to see details.

An alternative command

I will give that a whirl...also trying install on another rig lying around...... Intel mobo with dual core 2Gb ramj and 2Gb of ram tonight
Much later bios..in case that is a problem.
