best text editor for linux

On Win98, I use TextPad for composing my manuscripts for LaTeX. I like the way I was able to set up drop-down menu commands to run Latex, Yap, pdflatex, dvi-to-ps, and all the other utilities. It also has syntax highlighting, and can have multiple text files open at once, all of them listed down the side in a file selector box.

What text editor would anyone recommend for composing latex documents in linux RH9? I would like it to have the same functionality as above.

Thanks.

Best is of course subjective, but I've heard good things about Kile.
