Balance control for the volume

Hi, how do I change the volume balance? I have looked around my system but I can not seem to find it.
My main passion is music what is the best media player to use? I didn't really care for Rythembox, Amarok, or Audacity. I am using VLC at the moment it doesn't sound to bad but it's not giving my speakers their true potential, when I used windows media player 11 the sound was fantastic.
Thanks for the help.

In VLC, try going to "Audio-->Effects and Filters."

That's where equalizers and similar controls are found. Maybe something there will help.

(I just discovered that menu item last night, so I haven't had a chance to play with it much.)
