Backing up on ubuntu 18.04

I want to backup my files on ubuntu 18.04 to my google account. Everything is fine until I get to the final step which tells me the permissions I have to agree with Gnome such as creating and deleting emails, contacts, messages and other files. I backup files there from other computers and tablets and it never asks for that much control. How safe is it?

Are you using the google drive file manager plugin or just uploading files via a web browser? Not entirely sure how the file manager plugin works but dropbox's is probably the same. It essentially syncs a chosen directory with the remote storage.

Depends on how much you trust Google. If you aren't paying for it, I wouldn't have that as my only means of backup but that's just my opinion. Also no clue what Google does with your data or how well it is protected. You can always encrypt it then push it to them but I would still put it somewhere else: thumb drives, external hard drive, another cloud service, NAS, quite a few options depending on whether you want on site or off site storage.

Give Google Drive access to my filesystem?
I wouldn't do it.

I had never tried to do a backup until recently and after checking several options I downloaded Brassero. After a little practice I figured out how to use it. Now I have everything I wanted to save backed up on a DVD.
