Attempting to install Ubuntu Studio on two HDD

Hello
I am still a bit of a novice in-spite of having had desktop Linux distros in the past, am now returning after five years.

I have Ubuntu Studio 16.04 on my 461.9 HDD internal HDD with 3.9Gb extended & 3.9Gb swap.. I now want to install Ubuntu Studio 20.10 using this only for much smaller boot & swap and have the /home on my 3TiB external HDD.

Booting the live disc then using GParted I successfully shrank to 1.4TiB the external drive in preparation to have as /home.

Following this guide:
https://www.linuxjournal.com/content...wo-hard-drives.
I came to a halt after attempting to delete a partition on the internal drive. I have tried this a three times on the large and once on the small existing sections, each time resulting with only the delete button showing it has been selected and everything static for hours.

Is there anything else that can be done to move forward?
Thanks in advance

What is on the partition you are removing?
I had a similar issue in trying to resize an LVM partition because one of the LVs happened to extend past the end of the one I removed. End result was a new install to allow resizing the PV and the LVM partition. Gparted just hung forever because of the occupied space it could not reclaim.

Much thanks computersavvy,
The main partition has a full install incorporating 23.3 GiB of /home folder.. confusingly when I open that there is 228.9Gb of music files?!!.. Before creating the live disc I managed to back up all the other folders in there to the external Hdd but only a minuscule amount of the music, so I am concerned about losing the rest - the guide recommends deleting all partitions (nothing about loss within them). Following your experience I would have to install over the lot which is what I want to avoid and find some way of installing mostly to the external & just use the internal for booting.. or similarly to you do a full install but to external so as to protect the existing internal home file
