Hello wimmo1956. I too have an ATI Radeon 9800 pro on Suse 8.2. My monitor is a Sony 20 SEII. I'm running kernel 2.4.20. My mainboard is a Tyan S2468 Thunder K7X with two AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processors. I'm trying to use the fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-2.9.13.i586.rpm driver downloaded from ATI and I use the fglrxconfig utility to build the XF86Config file. Oh yeah, I'm running XFree86 4.3.0.

Here are the problems I've had:

1) If I run X (I use KDE) with the unmodified XF86Config then I get a dark screen.

2) If I set Option "no_dri" to "yes" then I get a "scrambled" screen.

I've searched the net and can find no solution. What sucess have you had?

Got Hercules 3D Prophet Radeon 7000 .....
had same problem with blank screen ....
boots up with screen but once the Xserver is running the screen goes blank ...
( SuSE 8.2 & an old no-name monitor ) .... said something about a "$DISPLAY" not being set .... and something with xresolution not having a default value or so .... NewBee ....

I said Yast2 that I had some monitor it had in its list as it always told me that my monitor wasn't configured ....
Mostly it works after boot ... sometimes I have to restart the Xserver ..... or change from one screen (? Console ... donno .... the Ctrl + Alt + e.g.F1 ..... F7 (graphical) ..... ) .

Me giving an answer is quite scary as I still am very much a wi Linux toddler ..... Maybe it woz helpful .

Ooooookay ~ I had the same problem as you all; I'm running Redhat 9 with a Radeon 9800 Pro. First off, you need to uninstall the Mesa libraries if they're installed.

rpm -e --nodeps XFree86-Mesa-libGL-4.3.0-2

Type that as root to get rid of the MEsa drivers (which I've heard are a cause of trouble with Suse).

Likewise, uninstall the fglrx libs too. Just to be clean and make sure everything is sexy.

Now reinstall the RPM. Watch for messages about what you'll need to do with your kernel. Read through the install messages. I had an error, and two shell scripts I needed to run and then a full reboot to load the new kernel. Run fglrxconfig after the reboot, or before, and you should be in good shape.

If you can't find the install messages let me know, I can find the shell scripts again for you.
