I am running SUSE 10.2 64-bit and am trying to run the ATI proprietary driver obtained from there website. I have a ATI Radeon 850 PCI-express card. I successfully installed the driver and it exhibits the following behavior. If I hook my monitor up via the VGA head on the video card linux works fine, however if I hook it up with the DVI head I get a black screen when X starts. If I boot up with the VGA cable I can give it the following command to switch to the DVI head which then works: aticonfig --enable-monitor=tmds1 --effective=now. I am assuming since I can get the DVI to work once X starts there should be a way of getting it to work on boot. I would use the VGA head but that is taken by my XBOX. I am new to linux it might be missing something very obvious. I would appreciate any help provided.

If you look about mid way down the page of the link below you'll find an option called "MonitorLayout" which I believe would be placed in the 'Section "Monitor"' of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Based on how I understand that option, you would add a line to the monitor section called Monitor Layout to use the primary port (head) as in the sample below:
My Dell 1905FP and nvidia card have DVI, but I don't have that option specified, probably because it was hooked up via DVI during installation.

I am having the same issue with openSUSE 11. The VGA works fine but the DVI does not. Back to xorg.conf
