I haven't used Yahoo Messenger for Linux, but I do know that they keep changing their protocol/logon method, so I'd assume if you don't have a fairly recent version that might be an issue. If you can't figure it out, it might be worth a shot to try gaim ( http://gaim.sf.net) which allows you to log on to the Yahoo network.

I also agree that you should use GAIM. The Yahoo! team dont seem to update the linux messenger often, and gaim works really well (I use it for MSN).

Gaim does have problems with logging on to Yahoo from time to time just because they change their protocol so often, but it seems the developers get it fixed within a day or two everytime it does. I use it for the AIM, MSN, and ICQ networks and it works great!

I have to agree. The proprietary client is the only one that seems to weather the storm (and properly do file transfers). Be sure you have the 1.1 and not the older 0.99.
Why don't you try to erase your preferences from your ~/.ymessenger directory and re-run it. It will present you with the first time wizard again. Perhaps it'll work that way.
