Start reading the manual page I'd say. If you still find it "confusing" read the manual pages again. If you still have problems then post what steps you took and what is confusing you *in detail*. Now if you've been at LQ long enough you would know where to find related info with LQ's search or "similar threads" features. There's a load of threads dedicated to all sorts of recovery tools complete with walkthroughs.

Hi, I have found testdisk to be very useful.
If you have it installed you may find the installed docs here...
file:///usr/share/doc/testdisk-6.9/doc/testdisk.html

But I think both testdisk and photorec are for recovery of files from a whole partition.

file:///usr/share/doc/testdisk-6.9/doc/photorec_step_by_step.html

It may be useful if you know the file types you want to recover, and a spare partition of the same size or larger.

Both dd-rescue with dd_rhelp, and ddrescue are for whole partitions too.

Sorry I can't point you in the right direction, maybe you could brows for it here..

Testdisk is for partition data recovery while Photorec is a file carver. Same package, different purposes. Tools like dcfldd, rdd-copy, dd-rescue, ddrescue and such (linen?) can help you make backups (just in case you fsck up again/more) but they can't recover data themselves.

I used testdisk to recover an old cdrom (data) and then I tested a 20gig pata HD and recovered

all of the songs (mp3, wav, m4a, aac, ogg (etc)), but I had to rename some of them.

I thought that was really good. The drive appeared blank.

So Photorec could be used if you scan the partition for particular file types like I did.

Is that what a file carver does/is?

cheers, Glenn
