ALSA won't detect card in Gentoo

I'm trying to get my onboard soundcard working now that KDE 3.4.1 is installed and running perfectly.

I'm following the instructions in the Gentoo ALSA Guide to get things working, compiling ALSA support as modules and selecting my card from the PCI Devices section in menuconfig (my card is an onboard SiS AC'97 controller).

The problem is that when I've emerged alsa-utils and ran alsaconf, it tells me that there are no PnP or PCI devices found, same under ISA (expected). Gentoo knows my card is there as when I run lspci I get:

Code:
bash-2.05# lspci -v | grep -i audio
0000:00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0)

The card has worked properly on any Live CD or other Gentoo version I've ran so I'm a little confused as to why it's failing to function under 2005.0.

I would greatly appreciate any help you kind folks could give!

TIA

Is the module loaded?

What is the output of:

# lsmod

OK, ALSA now recognises the card as SiS SI7012 with CMI9739 and loads the appropriate driver, however I can't set volume for it in either alsamixer or amixer! I have no option to do so. Both Master and PCM channels have no volume bars where everything else (Master Mono, Surround, Mic, etc) does.

Confused and needing help...

Running lsmod I get this:

Code:
bash-2.05b$ lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
snd_ioctl32            27136  0
snd_pcm_oss            53024  0
snd_mixer_oss          18048  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq_oss            35456  0
snd_seq_device          8332  1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq_midi_event      8576  1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq                55136  4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_intel8x0           32640  0
snd_ac97_codec         80208  1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm                86920  4 snd_ioctl32,snd_pcm_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer              22536  2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd                    49736  10 snd_ioctl32,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_device,snd_seq,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore               9248  1 snd
snd_page_alloc         10120  2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm
radeon                 75136  1
drm                    64680  2 radeon
amd64_agp              11756  1
agpgart                30700  2 drm,amd64_agp

s2io                   38348  0
8139too                23936  0
...so the drivers are being loaded correctly at boot, but when I finish running alsaconf I get:

Code:
Running modules-update...
Loading driver...
 * Loading ALSA modules...
 *   Loading: snd-card-0...                                               [ ok ]
 * Restoring Mixer Levels...
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1039: bad control.6.value index            [ !! ]

Setting default volumes...
And then:

Code:
bash-2.05b# /etc/init.d/alsasound start
 * Loading ALSA modules...
 *   Loading: snd-card-0...                                               [ ok ]
 * Restoring Mixer Levels...
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1039: bad control.6.value index            [ !! ]
when I try to start things manually. I think this may be the problem but don't know how to fix it.
