The shutdown command restarts by default. You need the -h option to get a "halt." Look at shutdown --help (or poweroff --help or halt --help) for the various options.

RHEL5 contains a few propitiatory applications and is only legally available from Red Hat. If you have a legal copy, you have purchased support from Red Hat, and they will be quite willing to assist you in installing the operation system.

If, on the other hand, you don't have a legal copy, then you can obtain a copy of the CentOS system, which contains all the FOSS parts of the RHEL 5 distribution. If you need help installing a FOSS distribution, many people will be able to assist you.
