I made the mistake of installing the version if SAMBA that comes with RedHat 9. Don't remember the exact version, but it doesn't come with SWAT. I have since uninstalled it and installed 2.2.7 in its place. However, now I do not have a service for samba and I'd like to add one. I've read the chkconfig man page, but that did not clear up my confusion. Right now I start smbd and nmbd with a cheap 2 line script that runs at run level 5. I'd like to be able to start and stop samba from the service configuration gui. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Did the script you want disappear when you uninstalled the old version of Samba? If so, you could reinstall the old version, save a copy of the old script somewhere and then install 2.2.7 again.
I know nothing about how to start Samba. But many times I have rewritten SuSE scripts for other services. I find it easier to rework the old script than to write one from scratch.
