3d acceleration on ATI Rage Pro 128

Hi, I'm fairly new to Linux, but have been working with computers for years. I have an HP e-pc 42 with an ATI RagePro 128 agp card that I am unable to get 3d video working. The installation is Gentoo 2006.1. Is there a howto available anywhere? I have tried the steps located at http://gentoo-wiki.org for setting up ati drivers, but all I ever get when following the instruction is gdm and xorg to stop working.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

dunno about ATI cards, never used one, mainly because Nvidia's linux support is superior to ATI and I just happen to have a system that came with an nvidia card.

Normally with nvidia cards, one of the stages for installation/implementation is to change the Xorg.conf file, so that instead of using the generic "nv" driver, I'd use the proprietary "nvidia" driver.

I'm guessing that that would be the reason for the x server failing too start. You could try following the gentoo wiki instructions again, and if it goes as before, try just logging in with CLI (probably as root) and then look at the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what error messages it gives you. I seem to recall that gentoo should have installed the "pico" editor by default (unless you've changed it) so from memory the command would be
Code:
pico /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Also, have you looked at the actual gentoo forums ??? There might be something there.

regards

John
