3 Questions: Radeon 9500 Pro, Nforce and AGPGART..
Hi,
I'm not so new to Linux, actually the current Distribution SuSE 8.2 Pro is my 3rd run for the Penguin (SuSE 6.4 + 7.2).
But everytime something didn't work and I couldn't get it fixed, which always kept my from switching completly which is my goal.
There are a whole lot of problems to be fixed, but here are just the major ones:
1. Problem Radeon 9500 Pro:
I read a whole lot about getting the Radeon to work, so I ended up with dl the schneider-digital Drivers.
I installed them according to various manuals and finally got them installed without simlinks problems and screen errors.
But I don't get any further then that.
When I configure everything them with
fglrxconfig and let out the external agpgart module because I have a Nforce 2 board I get the following msg after typing startx oder modprobe agpgart:
#modprobe agpgart
/lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB-athlon/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpgart.o init_module no such device
Hint: insmod error can be caused by incorrect module parameters, incl. invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
/lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB-athlon/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpgart.0:
insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB-athlon/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpgart.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB-athlon/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpgart.o:
insmod agpgart failed
So, thats the agpgart problem
Now for the fglrx prob.
--------------------------------------------------------
#modprobe fgrlx
Warning: Loading /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB-athlon/Kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.o
will taint the kernel: non GPL-License-Proprietary. (c) 2002-ATI Technologys, Stainberg, GERMANY
1. The integrated LAN won't work.
After I manually installed the Nforce Driver Package out of the TGZ Packet and recompiled the Kernel
- w/h patch -p1 < Linux-2.4.20-agpgart.diff cause the file wasn't found - the system hangs when I
a) activate USB in the BIOs
b) the Ethernetcard is configured by YaST while it's startin SuSE Conf
2. THE USB Supports lacks...
So thats all for now, hopefully anybody can help me....
PS: BTW, did anybody notice that there are manymore negative Smilies to be choosen than positiv ones....?
ok, i had a similar issue with AGPGART (for all intents and purposes), in the end it was that i had MTRR disabled in the kernel config, re enabling it, meant that all was good (required a kernel recompile obviously).
nforce lan, dunno, got it here myself, but haven't tried to utilised it, and i use a geforce card.
So I have to look for the MTRR and enable it?
Should it be modulized or in the kernel?
BTW, I recompile the Kernel with "make install" right?
And the right Config is found in /usr/src/linux2.4.20 or
can I type "make menuconfig" anywhere?
generally, change to the directory of the kernel you want to compile.
use the configuration of your choice, personally, i prefer "make xconfig"
after i've configured it, i do, "make dep clean bzImage" followed by "make modules" and "make modules_install"
after that, i cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmLinuz_2.4.20 and cp System.map /boot/System.map_2.4.20
and re run lilo (after editing /etc/lilo.conf)
whether you make it modular or monolithic is up to you. i prefer monolithic. And i don't make modules i know i won't use.
There is a thread in the Distirbutions / Slackware forum on how to compile a kernel.
