12.04 lts - 14.04 lts

I am on ubuntu 12.04lts and have downloaded 14.04lts as iso file - how do I get it up and running and what happens to the 12.04 file and contents.
I am dual booting ubuntu with XP(disconnected)
My ubuntu file is on my C drive. If I copy this file to my external hard drive, will this suffice as a backup

Thank you
BluenoteDave

It is the same. So dont worry about installing it. LTS just means 'Long Term Supported' but all 12.04 are LTS.

Are you planning to keep 12.04 and install 14.04 to a different partition?
If you install 14.04 to the same partition as 12.04, unless you have an option to save the data on 12.04 during the new install or have a separate /home or data partition, you will lose what you have on 12.04. Best to back up any important data to a different drive in either case. You should be able to update 12.04 to 14.04 from within 12.04 but still need to back up before doing this.
