Hi everyone I am new in the Linux 9.0 world and it's been really hard for me to get it to work properly.
I have a P4, I GB Memory, Nvidia Fx 5600 and I have 100 hd space.

I used Partition Magic 8.0 to have Windows XP profesional and Linux both as a dual booting.

The installation was succesfuly but now I get to ge part like this

password:

and then once I entered "root " as a login and my password, this is what I get


[root@localhostroot] # so here I don't know what to write so I can't not see my Desktop.

try startx (this should start your X-environment - the desktop) - besides, what distribution do you use? there is no such thing as linux 9.0, there is a linux 2.6, but thats the kernel only. the distribution can have a version number like 9.0.

you should not use the root account, unless you're configuring your box and installing new packages. for everything else there is a users account. you can do severe damage to your system when running root commands without knowledge.

If you want to run the graphical interface type the command 'startx' , without the quotes of course. This will bring up the windows type interface to Linux. You can also alter the run level to 6 if you want Linux to boot directly to the GUI.

Dear stedo, run-level 6 is for restarting the system. I think you must be thinking about run-level 5.

eyner, just edit this file-- /etc/inittab.

Change the run level from 3 to 5. The you'll be booted into GUI. And, you did install GNOME or KDE, right, along with the other apps in your installation.

And finally, let me guess......you've installed Red hat 9, right?

I would suggest some reading. You will need to learn some basics about Linux for it to be useful. Try google, and www.tldp.org. Both contain many resources that will help on your path.
