That error message doesn't look complete. I tried looking it up -- as I assume you did -- and didn't find anything that might explain what PuTTY was complaining about. "Cannot display... what?" Do you even get the initial form/dialog box to specify what host you want to connect to?
Aside:
Is there a reason why you would need to use PuTTY instead of simply issuing "ssh username@host" (or sftp if that's what you need to do)?
I was unaware that PuTTY had even been ported to Linux so I installed it -- it wasn't part of the standard install on my distribution -- and, yeah, it looks like the putty I used for a time on Windows. But [scratching my head] why when 'ssh' and 'sftp' connections can be made without needing to install any additional software.
