after failing extremly badly getting windows 95 laptop networked to FC1 I figured I would try and get XP pro and FC1 networked, I have everything setup the way I like it, only 1 (one) problem, my XP pro box can ping the FC1 box, but my FC1 box can't ping the XP pro box , my ethernet card lights are on, one is green and one is orange, I am pretty sure the orange means connected, and the green means that the connection is good, but I could be wrong.
When I ping the linux box from the windows box, I get a ping echo back, if I ping the windows box from the linux box nothing shows up, if I hit "CTRL-C" to cancel the ping, it says how many pings have been sent and how many were received/not received, in this case all of them were not received.
my big fat questio is, why can't I ping the windows box from the linux box?
Is DNS part of "the way you likie it"? Or are you using hostnames or anything? because if you are it could just be that mucking you around. However if ur using ips then im not sure. Can other things connect to eachother? for instance does apache (on either machine) or sshd work? if so then I think it may be a problem with the windows box...but im not sure i just throwing my 2 cents worth in
I would perfer to use DNS but I have no idea how to actually set it up, and I understand that you think the windows machine is at fault, although I still don't know why the linux box could be pinged but not the windows box
NOTE: I found out what the orange and green lights mean:
green = connected at 100mbps
orange = connection monitor (blinks when data is being sent/received)
It may be possible that the windows box is just dropping the packets for some reason...if you have some sort of nazi firewall it may be set not to respond to pings. (im slowly getting out of my league here though)
I thought of that and I turned off my firewall and did a few test pings to my windows box and no go, turned my firewall back on for windows and I can't ping the linux box anymore
I figured out why I couldn't ping the computers from each other...I was entering the wrong IP I was adding a 1 to my IP address "192.xxx.10.2" when I was pinging the linux box...I should have been pinging "192.xxx.0.2" how stupid am I? lmao!
OK, back on track, I can ping the computers and everything is fine, now how do I setup Fedora core 1 to be a client, because I want to access the internet through my windows XP box, so it would look like this:
internet
XP pro box
FC1 box connected to XP box at 100mbps with cat5e ethernet cable
Well er...ill just leave that alone then....lol suppose it was a reasonably easy mistake to make
As for the client thing...the only thing I can think of is setting up a proxy, like Lansuite602 or wotever it is...but i dont know any details, im more for the XP as clients and linux as server
on windows I downloaded puTTY and I could login through ssh, to test the connection out, I rebooted...works nice now if only I can figure out how to give linux the internet connection through windows
