I don't use the gui for anything other than e-mail and firefox and to configure linux security. The only reason I use it for those is because I cannot find a good way to do those jobs from a command prompt.

ahildoer,

sorry for not getting back with you...

I didn't actually heed your advice, though I think it would've worked.

Instead, I installed suse10 for the first time and find it to be much better overall than FC*

thanks again...

If you think SUSE is nice, try Ubuntu.

interesting, never heard of it. will have a look for sur ehtough.

The one thing I hate about suse is that it seems to be a pain in the rear when it comes to sys admin stuff like not being able to change the security descriptors, no ls-Z, they use modules for Apache instead of one httpd, which is kind a nice I must admit, just kinda hard to get used to.

How is ubunta?

Ubuntu is cake. Their slogan is "Ubuntu, Linux for humans." It should say "Ubuntu, Linux for real humans." The setup has fewer questions than a Windows install. Better yet, the hardware support is amazing. The default apt repository has nvidia drivers and drivers for laptops with apm, acpi and/or apic power management. The one problem I had was with my wireless lan card. I had to add the following line to /etc/networks/interfaces:

map eth0

After that all worked perfect. Best of all, if you are into coding, the library and compiler support is awesome. I had all kinds of trouble getting linear algebra libs working on FC4, but with Ubuntu it's...like I said...cake.
