What is the maximum speed i should be getting through wireless?

Is the internet speed really divided in half if you use wireless?

Is the maximum wireless speed really almost 7MB?

Is 106KB/s a good connection speed?

No, possibly, depending on range, which wireless standard you are using and the background noise level, and probably not, but then if that's what you are paying for, it would be unreasonable to expect more.

Any background info?

their house is next to mine , and there's not too much noise , pretty quiet neighborhood

It also depends on used encryption, if any, and signal strength.

You need to know what the speed is, they are paying for. Also, what security type is used to connect? wpa2?
Secondly to those, even a tv can play with the signal. what's the strength of the signal?
The maximum standard speed is arround 54Mbit/s (without latency loss).
Newer standards can go much higher, 300Mbit/s etc.. even a Gb/s have been spotted in the wild.
But a standard wireless router someone gets with a standard internet subscription is mostly tied to the 54Mbit/sec standards.

Not that the internet is actually that fast, it's the speed it can transmit/receive per second, incl. LAN transfers.

I think you should get minimum about 1MB/s. 100kB/s is little slow. Are you sure both devices are connected in G mode? It looks like they are in B mode. Can you write which antennas (gain) you have on your side and yours neighborhood?

My connection is supposed to be capable of 1 meg but I average between 140 to 180 kb. I have checked and in this part of the country for what I am paying that is the best you can do.

Your neighbours are separated by how many walls? And they are on other room or other apartment or building? The quality signal of WiFi fast degradate, if it must cross a walls, it depends on thickness and material.

P.S. Laptops have a small antennas inside, about 2dBi.

Intenet connection speeds are mostly given bit's per second so you probably mean a 1Mbit/s connection which is 125Kbytes/s.

The average you are talking about (140 to 180) is that Kbit or Kbytes per second???
If it's Kbytes per second then everything looks normal.

interesting , didn't know that! thanks. well ,pretty much the answer i got is ok. as you guys said , if 1 mbit/s is 120kb/s then i'm getting a good speed , thinking that it's over wifi. thank you.
